Own multiple copies MSFS 2020, can't play both

I own two copies of Flight Sim 2020, one purchased outright on Steam on my computer and another copy on XSX with Gamepass Ultimate subscription. I want to be able to play with my kid on multiplayer, but I can't get both games to run at the same time. I have spent the past 2 hours searching for steps on how to do this, but no luck. At one point I had both sims running, but couldn't get friend requests to go through. When I finally got that to work, I am now no longer able to run both sims together. I do have a separate account for my kid to use and set up on a family share. Only my account is on the pc, but both accounts are on the Xbox.

So is this even possible, or am I paying twice for what is effectively a single copy of the sim? Microsoft needed to relax their restrictions so families can play together without jumping through a ton of hoops.

You have to set the console as the home Xbox of the account that owns the subscription to share that suscription with other accounts without being logged in the account

Could you tell me what happens when you try to run both at the same time? You get an error message? You have to log in the Xbox to use the game with your account ? If that's the case the issues you are facing is that you haven't made the console the home Xbox of the account that have the subscription activw

I was digging around more and have an update. If I start the game on the Xbox first, then try on the pc, I get a message on the Xbox that the main profile (mine) logged in on another device and requires it to log back into the Xbox to play. It does this even when the kid account is logged in and active on both the Xbox and the flight sim profile (as shown in the upper right of the game's home screen). If I select to continue with the main profile, it reloads the sim on the Xbox. This allows me to play the sim on both, but only in single player mode on the pc. The Xbox version will allow multiplayer mode. If I log off the Xbox game, then I get multiplayer access on the pc.

So long story short, I'm able to get both running together, but only one will have multiplayer access even when using separate accounts.

Fyi, the XSX is not set as the home console. Again, due to Microsoft's confounding share rules when in the same household, we have a One S set to the home console even though it's realistically a secondary console. Otherwise we ran into other conflicts with the XSX set to home.
