    It's difficult to say as, whilst it could simply be the fans etc being full of dust, it could also be a sign that the hard drive is on it's way out....depending how much it has been used, hard drives can have a span of 5-10 years in general (sometimes more if lucky)

    Is this the only downside because the warranty is long gone due to the age of the xbox.

    Is there anything else i could do to fix the performance issues?

    Opening the console is not recommended as it can void any warranty you have and violate the terms of service.
