Opened backup Xbox One unit; unable to use promotional card I paid for due to expiration

As the title says, I have a brand new, never used "Choose One" card that was in the brand new Xbox One purchase that I opened.

Inside, there was a promotional card that allowed me to choose a free game download. The options are: 1) Forza 6; 2) Rise of the Tomb Raider; 3) Gears of War; 4) Rare Replay.

I cannot use the promotional card included in my purchase because the card says the code expired on 31/12/16.

As someone that just purchased a new Xbox One S, and has had both an Xbox One Day One Edition, and a standard Xbox One (this is the purchase that contained the promotional card), it is disappointing that the only reason I missed out on the opportunity for
a game is time.

I'm also an Xbox Live Gold member. If someone could please help me, all I want is to download 1 of the games offered on the original promotion card. Nothing more, nothing less.

Can't buy any games

The other thing with pre-paid cards like that are that they will only work with Xbox Live if you are allowed to use them for international purposes; if not, the card will not work, regardless of whether you could get the right expiration date.

How to check your Xbox MSP expiry dates

I've seen some comments on this elsewhere in the forums, and while someone may have posted this before now, I've certainly not seen it.

For those unaware and concerned over their Microsoft points expiring, you can check the exact date that they expire. Sign into Xbox.com with your gamertag, click My Account at top right, goto Billing History and then click the Payment Options tab, this will display your recent Microsoft points purchases and their expiration date. Naughty, naughty, Microsoft. :nono:

All Microsoft points will expire 12-mths after their redeemed date. It's not just the points that you had on your account before they were converted to real currency, Microsoft points that you can still currently buy today will also expire after 12-mths.

If you don't like Microsoft vapourising your virtual money then you'd be best to stick to the new Xbox Gift Cards, but with Xbox One and day-1 digital right around the corner I am sure most of us will use this money up before it gets checked out and placed into BillyG's bank account.

And here's another bit of info from the FAQ, I'll bolden the interesting bit. It mainly states whenever you buy anything Microsoft automatically use the money that is closest to expiring.

What is the difference between promotional and non-promotional balances?

From time to time, and for marketing purposes, Microsoft may offer promotional gift cards that you can redeem to your Microsoft account. A promotional gift card may require that you redeem the value listed on the card, or use any redeemed balance, by a certain date or within a certain time period. Please refer to any terms and conditions associated with the promotion in question for specific details or restrictions.

Any balance in your Microsoft account that has not been designated as promotional will not expire. However, if you do not use your account balance for a prolonged period of time, the law may require us to consider your account balance abandoned. In that case, and in some countries where the law requires it, we may be obliged to transfer any non-promotional balance in your account to the appropriate government authority and you will have to retrieve your funds from the relevant authority. We will try to reach you and give you adequate notice before transferring your account balance.

Hi I use to have credit cards to handle subscriptions... If the card maybe declined or expired or unable to process due to bank network errors. Clean the account of old cards, just use one card for now. Its best to try Pre-paid Cards or XBox Card or Microsoft
balance to pay for subscriptions. You can have paypal as the default. Switch to prepaid card or paypal as a default. It help me from getting message errors, one card is causing the error. Visit: https://account.microsoft.com/

As far as i am aware the only points that expire are the ones given away in promotions or from rewards.

Also, the trial for Xbox Game Pass have an expiration date because it's basically a promotion that came with your Xbox. A promotional card is the only ones that has an expiration date.

Now when you purchase it at a retailer>>they dont have an expiration date. So to answer your question>>>they wouldnt be able to use that game pass trial because it's expired.

the promotion was on my xbox console's dashboard when my xbox live gold was about to expire. There was two options for the promotion, one was a discounted 12months and the other one was 600points if you use a prepaid card. I just checked my email, there
is no email with the 600 points.....
