  1. Ongoing headset and controller disconnect issues

    Hi there,

I have had this problem for years where my controller and/or headset will disconnect from the xbox console. I'll be playing a game and all of a sudden I get disconnected and my controller or headset will stop working for 5-30 seconds.

For background, this was happening on my gen 1 xbox one, then on a 2nd xbox one I bought later, and then now on the 2 series x consoles I have. I've lived in 5 different places (houses and apartments) and in all places I've had this issue to some degree or another. Also about 6-8 controllers which are all first party xbox controllers, and all connected to various different xbox consoles throughout the years (including the series 2 elite controller).

My headset is currently the gen 3 Astro A50's and then I've tried various other supposedly premium headsets over the years which have all had severe disconnect issues (Turtle Beach Stealth, the Xbox wireless headset that came out last year, Audeze Penrose X, Logitech headsets - not the new arctis nova pro which I just ordered). Basically the only ones I haven't tried are the latest one from Razer, the Arctis Nova Pro which arrives today, and the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay headset which looks good, but lacks some functionality that would justify a $500 headset in my opinion.

I just want my headset and controllers to stop disconnecting so I can focus on enjoying my games rather than getting frustrated by this seemingly flawed tech. I've got all of the latest updates, I've tried resetting my consoles and all that, but the fact that this is happening with multiple different consoles over different generations and with different headsets and controllers leads me to believe that this isn't the solution or problem in my particular case.

What I THINK may be the real issue is good old fashioned wireless interference so I wanted to come here and see if anyone had any good ideas on how to reduce wireless interference and see if that helps? For example, I've wired in both of my xbox's (the two series x consoles that are currently in use), but that hasn't really done the trick beyond boosting my game download speeds. I have my router set to have 2 networks, a 2.4 ghz connection (work laptops and all of our smart home devices are hooked up to this network) and a 5 ghz connection (the 5 ghz one doesn't get used for much besides my gaming laptop and before that the 2 xbox consoles). My modem/router is a combo unit (NetGear C7000) if that helps and sits about 3 feet away from my primary xbox. The other xbox is connected via an ethernet powerline device in the adjacent room (the consoles and modem/router) share a wall basically. I'm also about 10 ft from the TV/console in the living room and maybe 8 ft in the bedroom.

I have line of sight to both the console and the headset base for my Astros (and any of the other bases I've had to use) so I don't think that's the issue either. I've noticed that the disconnects definitely get worse when my fiancé is on the bedroom xbox and I'm in the living room which is why I'm leaning towards wireless interference as being the main cause. What I don't know is what else I can do to reduce wireless interference at this point.

I tried to include all of the details, but if I missed anything that could prove useful please let me know! I'm open to any ideas because I'm really not sure what to do at this point to fix this issue. It doesn't seem like Microsoft is going to shift protocols any time soon so I hope I can find some way to make this work.

    :)

Ongoing headset and controller disconnect issues

Hi Geri, thanks for replying. Here's some more info as requested:

    1. May we know what is your the make and model of the controller and headset?
      1. Controller is the official Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 (I have 2 and both have the same issue). Headset is the Astro A50 Gen3, but I've had the same issue (but even worse) on the Microsoft Xbox Wireless Headset and several others that connect straight to the Xbox.
    2. Are the drivers currently updated to the latest version?
      1. Yes all controllers and headsets are fully updated with the latest available firmware
    3. May we know if the console is surrounded with devices, concrete wall or any barrier like wires, glasses?
      1. There are other devices nearby. Nintendo Switch, PS5, and the modem/router combo unit are within a few feet of the Xbox in my living room.
      2. No concrete or anything like that. It's a modern apartment building so just standard drywall. There are cords and stuff around if that's what you mean, like the HDMI cords coming down from my TV pass by the Xbox, but the PS5 and the rest of the devices all sit to the left of the console.
      3. There are no walls or any obstructions between me and the console / headset dock.
    4. Is the controller's fully charged?
      1. I have tested this since this was mentioned as a possible issue in other threads, but the battery level doesn't seem to really matter. I get disconnects at 100%, 75%, 50%, etc.. The battery life in the elite controllers is pretty good so I would say my battery level is normally over 50%.
    5. Are you seated far from the Xbox Console?
      1. About 8 feet away from the console / headset hub with a direct line of sight. The consoles sit on top of a table, not in a media center or anything like that.
It definitely seems to occur more often when I'm playing more intensive games. For example I noticed that my headset always has disconnect issues when I'm playing Ark: Survival Evolved.
I hope the above helps provide more context and thanks for looking into it!

Ongoing headset and controller disconnect issues

    Hi MC HAMM3RTIME,

Welcome to Xbox Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

We understand that you are trying to stop the disconnects from your headset and controller. Let us check on this together so you will get back to gaming.

As per your description, the issue might be caused of the interference, I would agree with this as you will be having frequent disconnects caused of it. Using the controller or headset distant from the Xbox console can also contribute to disconnects or environmental factors perhaps. To better isolate your issue, we would like to ask for few questions:

    1. May we know what is your the make and model of the controller and headset?
    2. Are the drivers currently updated to the latest version?
    3. May we know if the console is surrounded with devices, concrete wall or any barrier like wires, glasses?
    4. Is the controller's fully charged?
    5. Are you seated far from the Xbox Console?
For the time being, if you have not tried this steps, please perform this on your device.

First, you will need to unpair the controller that’s giving you disconnect issues. Remove the batteries from the controller to allow it to reset. Keep the controller without power for about five minutes. Now, just re-pair the controller to your headset and see if the disconnection issues is resolved.

You may also take an idea or two from this thread - XBox only visible in network map when laptop connected through.

We hope it worked out well for you. If not, please reply back to this forum to let us know. We will be glad to follow up and help you.

    Have a great day ahead.

    Sincerely,
