Progress is linked to the account and you will not lose it regardless of whether you change the email or gamertag. You can make the change at

If you are sharing the account on one xbox one for two gamertags then why would u have to cancel hers unless they are two separate accounts.

gamertag 1 is the email you want

gamertag 2 is the gamertag you account you want to move it to

well typically you don't move a gamertag 1 to more then one account

first you free an account with the email you want with the one you created

that frees it up

then you use the email you want on the gamertag 2

so unless you are swaping two emails between two accounts you do have to wait the 30days on one of them

It's like a have two gamertag a for the one account or something!

Thanks again. I will impose on you one more time. Can you tell me how to edit the existing gamertag and remind me how I assigned her a gamertag in the first place? Please understand that I was a network engineer for more than 30 years and solved problems that would cross Solomon's eyes, but this is way outside my wheelhouse. I'm sure I can eventually figure out how to do this, but a little guidance up front will save me a lot of time.
