No free first gamertag change?

It is stated on the Xbox support site about changing your gamertag on the Xbox one that the first time is free but any changes after that have a fee. Just got the Xbox one and when I go through the process it tries to charge me $9.99 to change it.

Changing gamertags

The only way to change your gamertag once for free is if you accepted the system assigned gamertag when you signed up your account,, If you made your own gamertag then there is no free first change.

I do agree that the actual cost of a gamertag is expensive though, But i don't see that cost ever changing.

No Free Gamertag Change!?

Hi, I've gotten into a serious problem. I somehow DON'T have a free gamertag change!? I don't believe I changed the gamertag via a free token, as it was around 2014... Is there ANY way of getting another one - maybe by half off price? I seriously had this
gamertag for a really long time! I'd like to know what I can do, thank you.

The free gamertag change is only available for the first 30 days of an account and only if the system chose a random gamertag for you. If you chose your gamertag, you'll have to pay to change it.

Just to further clarify what Smwutches said - if you create a new account on Xbox One, then you have one free Gamertag change. It looks like your profile has quite a history on it. You would have had that free GT change on your Xbox 360 console when setting
up your profile for the first time.

You are allowed one free gamertag change as long as you didn't choose it yourself. So if you've been using the default gamertag when you setup your account, typically this will be a randomly generated name with numbers, your good to go, otherwise you will
need to pay to have your gamertag changed.

From PC:

Go to the Change gamertag page at account.xbox.com.
Sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
Enter your new gamertag, and then select Check Availability.
Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it.

From xbox:

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select your gamerpic in the upper-left corner of the screen, and then press the A button on your controller
Select My profile, and then Customize profile. Select your gamertag to edit it.
You can either select one of the suggested available gamertags, or select Make my own to create your own
When you're finished, select Claim it, and then select Sounds good.
Once you see your gamertag, select Close.

Also keep in mind you have 30 days to use your free change. It's not free after a certain amount of time has passed.

If you never change your Gamertag you have 1 free change, but only if your actual Gamertag was the Gamertag system assigned to you

It is only free if it is system assigned gamer tag. If you chose the tag yourself then you have used your free change.

Hey it sounds like you may have changed your gamertag once before and you may not remember when that occurred. You can contact Xbox Support to further assist you on or if you may have changed your gamertag previously. You may have a free change of gamertag
