Internet Connection will NOT be Required to play Offline Xbox One Games

Today, Microsoft made a complete 180 and updated some things with the Xbox One that everyone has been complaining about.

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

The sharing of games will work the same way it does today with Xbox 360, by simply sharing the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold, which is a bummer because you'd think they would still offer the new options to share those with at least one friend who's been on your friends list for 30 days. Also, just like Xbox 360, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray to be able to play it. That is for those who download the game to the console for those extra benefits.

Grand theft auto 5 wont install past a certain point on my xbox one

Cancel download -> Go offline -> Install while offline -> Go online and then do the updates!

This issue can be a direct result of a slow internet circuit. Without know the specifics of your circuit bandwidth it make it difficult to diagnose exactly what is going on. You can go to the detailed network statistics for that information. Other than
that about the only things you can do that might help some are to do a hard reset on your console and reset your network equipment (router/modem) by powering them off for a couple of minutes then restarting them. Let us know. Good Luck!!

Hey Victor,

Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. Is this a disc game or is it digital? If its disc, then you may want to try installing your game while your console is offline. Aside from that, I recommend checking out this troubleshooting article :

If only Destiny is not working, it MIGHT be, that (un-)intentionally Activision removed the ability to unlock the Xbox One Destiny with the Xbox 360 disc.

They offered owners of the original Xbox 360 Destiny the option to upgrade to the Xbox One Destiny during a transition period.

Maybe they removed that option to prevent people from using "used" discs to unlock the game, or since Bungie is not affiliated with Activision anymore, Activision doesn't have the right to "unlock" disc versions anymore, or whatever.

So DO NOT buy another disc, as the Xbox One ONLY reads the security sector of a Xbox 360 disc, and depending on the security signature of the disc, "unlocks" the game as a digital download.

You will always have the same version downloaded on the Xbox One. So don't waste your money buying new discs. They won't change anything.

If you're intending to buy the game, simply buy the digital download version instead.

If I understood well, are you not able to install disc based games on both Xbox One console and Series X when you're offline?
Or is this happening with only one of the two consoles?

The issue is happening on both consoles - the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. It only seems to happen with Xbox One discs. I have no issue installing Xbox 360 discs or Digital games.

And, is this happening when you're offline?

The issue with the Xbox One discs failing their installation at a certain percentage happens both online and offline. However, I discovered a workaround for the issue for when I am connected Online (searching for the game on the Store to initiate the download, as opposed to visiting My Games and Apps). However, I am now trying to find a solution that would allow me to install these discs while in Offline mode specifically, as the workaround doesn't work while Offline.
