    The only way to have the tag without the suffix is to change it to a tag that nobody else has.

    I know of a gamertag that's being held, not used

    gamer tag may have been used on the original Xbox - and has never been ported over to xbox 360 - but MS did release all these inactive tags a few years ago and people snatched them up and are saving them for a later date.

    i lost one of my tags due to this.

    Gamer tags are release after a number of years of not being used that time is not specific and has not happened for a long time. I would not wait on a certain gamertag; with the new system you can create it anyway with numbers added after it.
