New Xbox Doesn't Recognise Disks

OK, I've had an new, original Xbox, bought here in Australia about 9 years ago (JB Hi Fi I think), in storage (never out of the box). I've finally got space to add it to my setup, and I was looking forward to stepping back along memory lane. Setup was fine,
and I get the Xbox screen up fine on the TV, however when I put a disk in I get a message saying

" Your Xbox can't recognize this disc. Make sure it's an Xbox game, DVD movieor audio CD. Also check to see if the disc is dirtyor damaged. Remove the disc to continue".

Needless to say these are all Xbox games on which I've put many hours on my old box.

Anyone got any ideas? (I've tried a number of disks with the same result, and have tried turning it on and off again).

Should also add that I've tried inputting my internet settings, but no luck. And DVDs aren't recognised either.

So I bought a disc cleaning unit to try and clean the lens. However, I found I couldn't actually run the thing in the Xbox, which just gave me the same message as before:

" Your Xbox can't recognize this disc. Make sure it's an Xbox game, DVD movie or audio CD. Also check to see if the disc is dirty or damaged. Remove the disc to continue".

I think it probably time to admit defeat and accept the fact that reruns of XIII and Time Splitters ain't going to happen

We are talking original Xbox games on an original xbox.

Not that I noticed. It would need to have an internet connection to do that I guess.

Did the console system update the OS (operating system) after you set up?
