[/quote]Sony doesn't have the exclusive rights to Blu-ray to the best of my knowledge. I mean, they make Blu-ray players that aren't PS3s and both the PS2 and original Xbox functioned as DVD players when that was a new thing. The reason the Xbox doesn't
have Blu-ray is because they went with the HD-DVD format, which lost out to Blu-ray early on in this console cycle. And at that point, I assume it was too late to redesign the Xbox with Blu-ray without just releasing a new console altogether, so Microsoft
probably held off on that. Point being: I believe Microsoft could add Blu-ray functionality to the next Xbox if they wanted, but it seems they're going in the all-digital direction so they might not

Blu-ray player probably needs an update if it requires an internet connection. Unfortunately, older versions and builds don't work offline sometimes

No I would expect a blu ray player to play DVDs as good as a standalone DVD player. Blu Ray players don't magically improve DVDs. The problem would appear to be that the One blu Ray player doesn't perform well when playing DVDs in comparison to other
Blu Ray players.

The HD DVD player was released for the Xbox 360 during the middle of the "format wars" between HD DVD and Blu-Ray, and Blu-Ray was the ultimate victor.





If you want to continue using that player, you'll have to hook it up to another working Xbox 360 console.

There are no plans or announcements to add support for the HD DVD player on the Xbox One. There hasn't been a movie released on HD DVD since 2008, and you can get the same movies on Blu-Ray or streamed online anyway.
