Needing a new username for Minecraft Java, yet I already have one on my account

Hello!

I'm on Linux, after switching from Windows, wanted to try something new, just recently reinstalled the Minecraft Launcher, and whenever I try to play Minecraft, it asks for a new username. I tried to enter my old username, but "it's already taken". I tried entering one that wasn't taken, and it said "Failed to create profile", probably due to the fact I already have a username connected to my account. On minecraft.net, it has my old username I used prior to this. It hasn't changed, there's just an error going on, and I have no clue what it is. I installed the launcher last night, and just got onto it this morning.

I fixed it! I just reinstalled the launcher and it works now.

Yes, one of my Microsoft accounts DOES show up as owning the game. However it also has a "Profile Name" button under the Minecraft Java section on the My Games tab, and it tells me that my username is already taken when I enter the username I was using on my Java account before migration.

Sorry about my late reply. Christmas and new year has been busy.

To make the following a bit easier to understand, I will refer to my kids as Carl and Ida.

What happened is; I bought minecraft for Carl using a mojang account. Here I created one with one of my emails. I do have another mail, which is the one I believed to not have been used for anything minecraft related.

However, when I tried to migrate Carls mojang account, to a microsoft account, using my secondary mail account - it sure does look like my other kid Ida, had tried to use this for some minecraft related stuff, since this mail was the one used on her PC. With this I mean that Carls minecraft java username, looks to have not been transferred correctly, since his java username has changed to a username I think Ida has made at one point. This I tried to change back to Carls original username, but this I am not allowed to do.

That is basically what I am asking for. Is it possible to somehow free up Carls original username, so that I can change his current (mircosoft) java username back to his original?

Recently, Microsoft started to integrate Minecraft Java accounts with Microsoft accounts. Could you have merged the wrong account at some point or signed in with the wrong account?
