Need help with original Xbox game and console

The original Xbox console was manufactured between 2001/02 (depending on your region) and 2006 which means your original Xbox is between 22 to 17 years old. The most common component to fail (other than the internal mechanical hard drive) would be the DVD optical drive - the component that reads game discs.

Microsoft no longer repairs or services these older consoles. You'll need a third party repair organisation to take a look at it.

Thanks for your post! The "Mercenaries" title listed on Games with Gold is an Xbox Original game. Games that are Xbox Original and backward compatible to the Xbox 360 need to be installed on a Microsoft branded Xbox Hard drive. This is why the console is
producing the error message mentioned above.

I have this problem with the official MW3 xbox controller and its just a faulty controller, i'd suggest using a different controller and see if that helps.
