Nearly all Xbox Game Captures deleted without warning

Over the past years, my Xbox has accumulated over a thousand captures. Xbox did not have a way to back up these captures to another device until a few months ago. I tried using OneDrive, but most clips would fail to upload despite a strong connection.

A few days ago, almost all of my captures were deleted. Captures I had uploaded and liked to the Xbox network, clips uploaded to OneDrive - all but 100 captures are just gone.

My Xbox storage wasn't even full, sitting at around 86%.

I researched online and have seen the same issue with other Xboxes over the past few months.

From 2019 to 2023, I saved 1000 captures locally onto my Xbox without uploading to Xbox Live. Only a small amount, maybe 10, were uploaded to Xbox live (but those were removed too).

I remember going through my captures with friends a few weeks ago with no issues.

The most recent update wiped all those captures except for 100 without warning. I started up my Xbox today, and they were just gone.

This is the case for multiple other forum discussions I have read. The most recent update corrupted my game clips, and no representative from Microsoft has contacted any of these discussions to resolve it. They only state that nothing can be done and back it up for the future.

I need a resolution for this. Someone from the Microsoft development team needs to reach out and apologize for erasing users' data. Four years of memories are gone because someone at Microsoft was too lazy to prompt the user to back up the game clips. Instead, the new update erased any game clips over the 10 GB max without warning.

Hello QuasiBiscuit857, sorry to hear you're having trouble with your captures.

I'm afraid that if the captures have been deleted there would be no way to recover them. However, you could try sites such as https://gamerdvr.com to see if they may be listed there.

As for saving the content you are able to store them on a USB 3.0 hard drive for easier access between PC and console.

Thanks for the information. This is an open forum and the devs don't come here often. However, what I can suggest if you'd like is to contact a Microsoft Advocate to see what they suggest. You can do so by logging in to https://support.xbox.com/contact-us and ask to be escalated when you get to a fellow gamer.

Some games in Gamepass / Xbox (Beta) / whatever its called keep their saves in the same folder as the game itself and when you uninstall the game, it deletes all your saves without a warning.

Have you changed consoles (eg upgraded to an Xbox One X) or your game capture settings to 4K SDR or HDR? If you selected 4K captures then you now need to manually upload them to Xbox Live. Only 1080p or 720p clips are automatically uploaded to Xbox Live
providing you still have space remaining.

If you want to check if you are near your storage limit on Xbox Live then open Recent Captures and select Show All. There will be a warning if you are near to the limit (not 100% if it displays at 90 or 95%). If you see the warning then select some of the
older clips you no longer want to keep and delete them to free up space on Xbox Live again.
