    Microsoft Account website.

    Try logging into your Microsoft account on the web page and change your name settings there. It should then proper gate automatically over to your xbox on the next login of your profile

    Hey mate,

    Well if you let the xbox pick the name for you, then you will have a free name change that you can use to update it. Otherwise to change the name it will cost money to do so.

    Alternatively, you could simply create a new account for them and pick a new name that way :)

    Changing your gamertag name will not solve this problem for you. This is why you won't be given the name change. What you need to do is change your privacy settings.
