My xbox one is updating but when it gets to 52% it shuts off.

Thanks for the reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I'm sorry to hear about the issue with the Xbox one shutting off
during an update. I recommend trying a power cycle
of the console by disconnecting and reconnect your console's power cable. Make sure the console is connected directly into the wall outlet.

If the problem persists, try doing a
soft factory reset of the console,
Reset and keep games and apps to help reset the operating system.
Since the console is not responding properly by providing the different menus. We are going to approach this differently.

Try this:

1. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.
   
2. Wait 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord back in.
   
3. Press and hold the
   BINDbutton (located below the Xbox button on the console) and the
   EJECTbutton (located on the front of the console), and then press the
   Xboxbutton on the console.
   
4. Continue holding the
   BINDand
   EJECTbuttons for 10-15 seconds.
   
5. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart. You can release the
   BINDand
   EJECTbuttons after the second power-up tone.
   
6. The console should power up and take you directly to the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.
   
7. Select Reset this Xbox
   
8. Select Reset this Xbox and Keep Games and Apps
   

Please note before doing this troubleshooting
step, make sure to know your email and passwords for your Xbox profiles.

Try this out and let us know the results.

does the system get very hot?

My controller instantly shuts off when headset (one that came with Xbox one) is plugged in. I've power cycled Xbox, updated controller I can't even update it with the headset plugged in because it shuts off.. Bought another headset it does the same thing..
Do I need a new controller already!? So frustrating. Help?

Update: Power-cycled again after failing to update during xbox setup (after having done factory reset), in which update got to same point, about 52%, before shutting down.

I'm now stuck in a loop where I can either run the update again, which fails, or turn off the xbox.

I'm looking into updating offline via another factory reset, but don't have a flash drive handy today to try this...
