Xbox Live Gold subscription is required to play online multiplayer, but if you will just use remote play that shouldn't be an issue.

If you are trying ro access games that require an online connection like destiny or eso yes

Otherwise no you don't need gold unless you are trying to access non f2p multiplayer games

Should be noted you need a stable connection and only xbox one or higher games are supported for pc

Is the account you're trying to play online with the same account you're posting from? If so, it might be that your Gold subscription has expired. I'm afraid you'll need an active Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online.
