My xbox 1 keeps saying I need a controller for this game despite one being connected

Sorry to hear about that, however, have you tried pairing it again or try connecting the controller to cable to see if it will suffice.

In the meantime, you may try the following troubleshooting steps:

-Press and hold the Xbox button in the center of your Xbox controller to open the Power Center.

-Select Restart console.

-Select Restart.

If it doesn't work, try a full power cycle:

-Press the Xbox button in front of the console until it shuts down.

-Unplug the power cables from the back of the console and on the wall socket.

-Wait for 10 seconds

-Plug in again and turn on the console

I should've mentioned that the device does not show up in device manager, and never has. My mistake. I have never connected this controller to another computer, but works fine on the console itself.

Following the steps in the link you provided doesn't work either, as the Xbox Accessories app just says 'connect an Xbox One controller to start', despite it being connected.

The console physically restarts whenever I turn it off. The controllers turn off with the console. By phantom controller I meant that my console shows a controller being connected despite my two controllers being turned off.

Have you tried to do a soft reset?

Awesome thanks for the update. We recommend to try a
soft factory reset. There could be some corrupt files causing this. When you do the reset, select reset and keep my games and apps. You will need to redownload your profile. You also will not lose any save data as it is saved to the cloud.
