My son is trying to by a xbox live gold subscription and it going to charge him 25 extra...

Unfortunately i do know that if the account used has previously missed payments you will have to settle that inorder to get back upto date with subscription.

Is this a new account and xbox or previously owned perhaps.

Did your son upgrade his account to include GamePass or GamePass Ultimate and forget to turn off auto-renew? It sounds like that may have been the cause of this outstanding payment and therefore will require clearing before a new Xbox Live Gold subscription
can be purchased.

It says that there is money past due in both of them and I think he needs to just cancel them first

Thanks for getting back and clarifying and it sounds as though we are on the right track. I would recommend in the future if taking up subscription offers (e.g 3 months for £1) that auto-renew is switched off. It means that the account wont go overdrawn
if payment cant be taken from the card on file and services will be stopped until purchased again.

Please be aware If you cancel the subscription on file, you may still be required to clear any remaining balance on the account to bring it up to date.
