Turn it off and unplug it, once the battery is fully charged is better to use the controller instead lof leaving it charging, as it might reduce the battery life.

plug/unplug trick is required to get enough charge on the batteries for them to charge on their own.

And if you keep on charging the controller while its already at full charge than that's your problem.

Once the pack is charged, the charger is
supposed to turn itself off. It doesn't always do so.

well if you plug the cord to the controller to charge the battery while the console is still on and you are playing a game how do you shut the console off and continue to charge the controller? i thought it didnt matter how you shut the console off because
it will always remain charging until the battery is fully charged no matter what way you turn it off?

My battery packs always break as well. I think my Xbox is broken, when I'm charging my controller via Play and Charge kit(yes, the Microsoft version)and I shut my xbox off it doesnt charge anymore, and when I turn it back on it says it is fully charged.
It is new battery pack as well.
