My headset chat mixer is grey and i do not have game audio.

Sadly none of the solutions work

my headset is plugged into the controller but it wont let me do anything to the chat mixer and the chatmixer bit is greyed out.

Are you using a wireless headset like Astro A50? If so then you have to use the physical chat mixer that is built in to the headset as the console guide chat mixer will be greyed out.

Please unplug the headset from the controller and then plug it back in. Because sometimes a loose connection can cause this issue.

And then power cycle the console. Kindly press and hold the power button on your console for 10 seconds until it turns off.

Unplug the power cable and wait for 10-15 seconds, then plug it back in and turn the console on.

Next is to check your audio settings. To do this please go to Settings > General > Volume & audio output.

Ensure that the audio output is set to Headset.

If the issue persist after performing the steps. Kindly use a different controller and test it out.

If you have another controller, try connecting your headset to it and verify if the chat mixer is still greyed out.
