My gamertag and username(?) Is different. How do I change it so that theyre the same

I tried to change my gamertag! The system adds some numbers automatically even with availability, which is a little annoying, but i don't really mind paying the fee to change it. The problem arises when i try to change my gamertag.

I guess theres like usernames, but it doesn't let me change what shows up on the games that I play. Just lets me change the display name.

I think this thread is the most similar to my problem, but the question still derailed into a different thing so i don't know what to do

I can SEE that i can change my gamertag in the costumizs profile tabz but once i press on the little pencil icon it goes back to asking me to change the display name that i dont use in game!!

When it comes to gamer tags, there was a change in 2019 that made tags simpler. However, with that change players will get an OG tag and a new one depending on if the game supports the new tag system.

Sorry, some games won't support the new tag and will still show the OG tag.

Most games started supporting the new format in 2020. It may take a few years to migrate all new games over to the new gamertag format, and some games (particularly titles that came out before or around the change) may continue to use the older gamertag system, so you may notice your Gamertag appearing different while playing those specific titles.

If the game doesn't show the newly created tag, it'll mean it doesn't support the new format just yet.

Not really sure what I'm meant to do with that information xO.

I think i changed the og tag and the new one. I have two gamertags and the one that id rather not have is the one that shows up when I'm gaming.

I'm trying to play Minecraft PE if that helps.

The actual username I'm trying to get for my gamertag is "" (same as my username on the forum) so I can't imagine why that wouldn't be allowed, especially as I've had it already on the previous account (where I changed it to free it up).

Surely it can't just be a case of "well that's just how it is" when, and I think you'll agree, it's clearly not an offensive username.
