May I exactly know your headset and controller make/model? What's your Xbox console model or generation as well?

When did this issue start to occur? Have you tried some troubleshooting steps already?

I apologize for the inconvenienced this has caused you. I will do my best to help you.

Please check Windows sound settings because Windows switches the default audio output device. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.

Under Output, make sure your headset is selected as the default device.

And then verify Wave link software settings because you are using an Elgato Wave 3, check the Wave Link software. To do this, open Wave Link and ensure your headset is properly assigned to an output channel. Make sure the Stream Mix isn’t muted.

Next is to unplug both the microphone and headset, then reconnecting them.

Then disable Windows audio enhancements because these enhancements can interfere with audio playback. Do this by opening Control Panel > Sound, select your headset, and go to Properties > Enhancements.

Check Disable all enhancements and apply the changes.

After that, kindly restart your PC. And test it out.

I’ve had the same problem. I would connect the headset into the controller if it has a cord and turn it, sometimes it worked for me and sometimes i had to push it harder into the controller. In the end I still had to buy a new headset unfortunately.
I had a hyper x cloud 9 headset and the mic broke, so i went on amazon and purchased a peozarr headset and it has the best sound. It is like $25, but they will send you a card to where you get another item of your choosing including a headset.

None of those troubleshooting steps are appropriate to my situation. As evident from the fact that sound plays out of other connected listening devices, there is no issue in my sound settings; and I cannot change the volume or similar, as the device and
accessory settings are not acknowledging that there is a headset connected (and there is sound when connected to other headsets). I am aware that this option appears below "buzz" in the device and accessory settings.

It is not that the mic is not recording, or that sound is not coming through the headset, it is that the controller won't recognise that there is anything plugged in when combined with my headset (even though it can recognise other devices, and the headset
is working).

check your entire headset wire for any breaks or wires showing, as stated before it will not matter what usb port you plug the controller into. also check the ear piece on your headset as sometimes they can become temperamental and break (i have had this
happen to me on several very expensive ones!) check your sisters controller with your headset aswell and vise versa your controller with her head set. hope this also helps
