"multiplayer not available for this profile"

If you bought the console used, be aware that digital game ownership licenses are tied to the account that originally bought the game, not the console you bought.

While the original purchaser can allow one console to share their games to other people playing on that console, that sharing right to the console can be revoked anytime.

So if you paid a higher price for the console because there were games installed on it, get to the seller and demand your money back.

Digital games can't be resold, and are basically worthless to you.

If the seller was kind enough to keep the console you bought as their "Home Console" (and allowing the console to share their games to you), and you get the Multiplayer error, you will need a Gold membership to play online multiplayer modes.

Please check under https://account.microsoft.com/services if you have a valid, paid Gold membership on your account.

That's great, thanks. I see now that the Gold is req. The seller didn't try to dupe me or anything - was actually a close friend whose son used the thing about ten times before switching to PS.
