Most externally installed game (be it on the official external card or usb) has disappeared!

... I suspect the "problem" might be that my Windows 10 system resides on an external hard disk which somehow messes up the installation process for "Administrator approval required for installation" games.

I have similar issues with apps and external storage.

It seems that for whatever reason, external drives aren't "trusted" as much as an internal system drive.

How is the external drive connected? Via USB, or is it an external SATA connector? You might coax the system into believing it's an internal drive, if you use an external SATA connector.

If you actually managed to install Windows on an USB drive (and it's not an official Windows To Go install), that might really be the problem.

Most likely the drive is full because of games and apps installed. The two best options are to either plug in a compatible USB external drive and move some of them to the external drive, or delete some of the installed games or apps on the console.

The message you get is because you need the official Xbox 360 hard drive installed. Not an external USB drive.

I believe you can store media
on the external with a 360, but if you 'install' a game, it has to be to the internal drive.

On the 360? USB storage on the 360 is limited to a maximum user space size of 32GB and up to two 32GB devices at a time can be attached to the console. While
there are some games and DLC that will not install to a USB Memory Unit, most games and DLC will. That's a per-game thing, not a Microsoft restriction.

You only really need an official Xbox 360 Slim hard drive if:

• The game insists on using an internal 360 hard drive. There are a select few 360 games that need to install some data from the disc to run, these games need an internal drive.
  
• You still want to play original Xbox games.
  

For almost all other Xbox 360 games you can install to a external hard drive via a USB cable. The Xbox 360 supports external drives up to 2TB. If you connect an standard external hard drive via USB you can just move the game or saves to the external drive.

Unless your Xbox 360 drive is official, you won't be able to play original Xbox games. Most drives are not official. Any official hard drive will be quite old now as Microsoft hasn't made these drives for nearly a decade.

I have an old Xbox 360 I use occasionally for games that are either not BC on the Xbox One/Series X or were never released on PC. I use a 1TB external hard drive. I also want to insure that my Xbox 360s old DVD drive will continue to work into the future, so I install my 360 disc games to the 1TB drive.
