Monitor Gigabyte G27Q wont do 1440p/120fps

    Hey fellas,

i want to report an issue regarding the XBox Series X / S. As stated above the mentioned monitor (and according to my research many many many other similar monitors) cant reach its full potential on the Xbox. Only 1440p/60 fps and with some hacky workaround*
1080/120fps can be selected on the console, yet the monitor can be run on PC via HDMI 2.0 on 1440p/120 fps without any problems.

The fix you are providing for 4k/120 fps here (Known Issues on Xbox Series X|S - Microsoft Community) doesnt work.

Because many people are having the same problem, also with other monitors i urgently encourage you to see this through!

*Go to video fidelity & overscan then click on overrides then go to hdmi and click use manual settings. Then go back and put the resolution back to 1080p and click yes. Now you can use 120hz/1080p

Heres a picture from the manual of the monitor.

Do you think, that Microsoft will tackle this issue someday?

I would hope so. It's not a massive technical issue. Unless a monitor has limited FreeSync Frequency (my GL27850 only goes up to 100Hz at 1440P) then it should be possible to fix.

And if not, are there even gonna be games which are playable on wqhd/120 hz?

Notable 120Hz games are the new Devil My Cry, Gears 5 (multiplayer only), Dirt 5 and Call of Duty Cold War (multiplayer only).

Some things to note. When you set the console to 1440P, games don't actually render at this resolution. On the Series X they will still render internally at 4K and then get down-scaled.

And there is another fact you need to consider that some are ignoring because they want the '120Hz mode' and this is VRR. Some people on other threads are mentioning how they got to 120Hz by turning off VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). Yes, that my well work,
but it will have a impact on the way games run and feel.

This is because without VRR your console may not show the next correct frame in sequence. Unless the game is running at a locked 120FPS and crucially not dropping frames, a dropped frame will show as a judder or a stutter, plus the screen will tear, which
can be unpleasant (it doesn't damage anything). VRR syncs the display with the game frame rate, eliminating the stuttering and screen tearing.

    Hello

This has been an issue since XB1X. Only now with the release of the Series X is it becoming more widespread and gaining attention.

It’s an issue with the XB not supporting non-VESA standard frequency timings. Many monitors are made with custom frequency timings, which is why the Xbox won’t accept the 120hz output at 1440p.

When you connect your console to a monitor or TV it reads a chip on your display that tells it what it is capable of. This is called E-EDID and stands for Enhanced Extended Display Identification Data. This tells the Xbox what the display can 'officially'
do display wise in regards to resolution, timings, HDR, etc.

At the moment, Xbox consoles only accept timings from the official VESA standard (Video Electronics Standards Association). These official timings are reported to the console, but many monitors also have non-standard timings.

For example the HP 27xq, which is 1440p 144hz) can display 1440p at a vertical frequency of 119.88 instead of the VESA standard. Hence why the Xbox doesn’t accept it. Info of these values should be found in your specific monitors user manual.

You can get 120Hz 1440P on a compatible PC all day because PC graphics cards are not tied down to only using VESA approved timings. The timings in the manual are correct, or at least they are for PC.

even the review here states he gets 1440/60 and 1080/120 so looks to be a monitor limitation or compatability issue with the xbox.

My monitor does the same and i only get the full benefits from display port even though the monitor has hdmi 2.0
