  1. Monitor capable of 1440p, 120fps for Xbox Series X

I am trying to purchase a monitor that can take advantage of some of the Xbox Series X's capabilities. Specifically, I would like to be able to play games at 1440p, 120fps. What do I need my monitor to have in order to do this? The monitor I am looking
at is a 1440p, 155hz monitor with only HDMI 2.0 and no HDR capabilities; will this work?

    :)

Monitor capable of 1440p, 120fps for Xbox Series X

Wow, this has been very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do the research and type this all out. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be as easy as just picking any 120hz+ monitor, but now I know the reason why.

Out of curiosity, could you list one or two of those $400+ monitors that are currently available and able to run Series X games at 120fps?

Monitor capable of 1440p, 120fps for Xbox Series X

    Hi,

Unfortunately, the Dell S2719DGF doesn't work at 120Hz over HDMI, so unless you're prepared to do 60Hz then this one isn't for you.

The reason why it doesn't do it on Xbox is because Microsoft have chosen to only support 120Hz on displays that conform to the VESA standard in refresh rate timings. The big problem with that is most monitors have their own custom timings. Also, rather annoyingly,
there are no officially approved monitors. We get lots of questions on here from users who have purchased a particular monitor, but can't utilise it fully.

Not a problem for PC users as most will connect these to their gaming PCs (I'm also a PC gamer) via Display Port and if they do use HDMI, their graphics card can use all of the timings, it doesn't have to stick to approved VESA ones.

This is why you can't just pick a monitor based on its advertised refresh rate and expect it to work, because unless you get lucky, it won't.

I've looked at some monitors for you, but at $300, your options are rather limited. I know of a few monitors that will do 120Hz on Series X, but they're $400+.

Around January a new set of monitors will be released with HDMI 2.1 built in. These, should, in theory at least, all work with Series X, but they'll probably be priced north of $400 too.

Don't feel that somehow you're missing out hugely without 120Hz. Yes, games that can run up to 120 fps are nice and smooth, but to get there the graphics take a hit. Most of these games so far have an internal resolution of between 1080P and 1440P, 4K goes
out the window completely. They also reduce graphics quality to get there.

Thanks for your reply! This is the monitor I was looking at: Dell S-Series 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Gaming Monitor (S2719DGF); QHD (2560 x 1440) up to 155 Hz; 16:9; 1ms Response time; HDMI 2.0; DP 1.2; USB; FreeSync; LED

As far as my budget if this monitor doesn't work, I'm really not trying to go over $300. Also, it may be worth noting that I'm not particularly interested in 4k gaming. 1440p, 120fps (or even 1080p, 120fps) would be fine with me.

    Hi,

What monitor are you looking at? Please provide the make and model.

If that model isn't sufficient please provide your budget for a monitor and I will do my best to recommend one that fits your needs. You can't just buy any monitor for the Series X as their specs do not necessarily apply to consoles.

HDMI to Displayport converter for monitor

Hello, thank you. I have a Dell s2417dg 1440p 144/165hz monitor was looking forward to using it for my Xbox Series X once it arrives for playing a few games at 120fps but i don't think that is possible since my monitor only supports HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2.
