    Misleading information on Gamertag changing


    Hello, I've been told to come here instead of a complaint center. I decided to change my gamertag through the xbox app. It seemed very easy to do so and there seemed to be no issues at all with the process. A few days later I realised I shouldn't have changed my gamertag, so I tried to change it back, went through the same process, no problems, until I reached a request for payment. And then I was told I could only change it once. I was greatly disappointed as I had had no idea that I had only one free opportunity. In fact, I double checked just to make sure that that information or a link to that info could be found anywhere during the process, and I couldn't find anything.

    Of course it can be found by googling it and/or checking the FAQ's of the website. However, it seems almost cheating and misleading to not be informed that I only have one opportunity. I have asked for my one free opportunity to be reversed but I could not be assisted. To me, this feels like blatant trickery to get money. I am happy to pay for it after I get my free opportunity or if I had been told but there is no warning about this on the app.

    Is there anything I can do?

    I contacted them. A support member that i got paired with claims that nothing can be done.

    • You can easily change your Xbox gamertag. If you want to change the gamertag that we created for you when you first signed up for Xbox (meaning you didn’t choose it yourself), you can change it
      one time for free.
    • After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox.
    • After that, all Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.

    Here in Xbox Forums we do not have the appropriate tools to further assist with billing or gamertag changes. As mentioned above,

    contact Customer Support    for further assistance.

    I tried support but there is no category that seems good for that case. I tried account recovery but people there were not able to help me and couldn't give me any directions on where i should try.

    You can try contacting support to see if there is anything they can do, but otherwise there would not be a way to go back without paying or possibly having the same type numbers added to the end. http://support.xbox.com/contact-us

    Hi Deterez,

    Really sorry for the issues you have had.

    It sounds like the desired username you wanted was already taken which then the system automatically tries to get the next available gamertag by adding numbers to the end of the name you wanted.

    This should have been made clear before submitting and I am sorry that it wasn't in your case.

    I would suggest contacting an member of Xbox Support who will be able to assist further with this matter.

    Please click "ask an question" and input Gamertag error and then click none of these and speak with an agent.
