I am trying to redeem a Minecraft windows 10 edition key from the Mojang website.

There was an offer to get the Bedrock Windows 10 version, but sadly, that offer expired on 04/21/20.

As someone who has Minecraft for both Xbox One and Windows (both Win 10 version and the Java version) I can answer this.

Poli5hesBubble: When the Windows 10 Edition (Windows Store Version) of the Minecraft entered public Beta in 2015/2016, owners of the pre-existing Java version were given a key to download and own the Windows 10 Edition (Windows Store Version) for free, as
they already owned it for PC (in Java form). However, this does NOT work in reverse; if you bought the Windows 10 Edition (Windows Store Version), you will NOT be given a free copy of the Java version.

KyleCBlanchard: Similar to the answer for Poli5hedBubble, if you own the Java version from Minecraft.net, you should be able to go to your Mojang account, log in and see a key that, once entered into the Windows Store or at redeem.microsoft.com, will allow
you download the free copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition for free.

When you say "old version of Windows", do you mean Windows 7 or 8?

If you have a valid license for these, you can still download Windows 10 from Microsoft, and install it on your PC.

Microsoft still doesn't block upgrades to Windows 10, even if the "free upgrade" period officially ended.

Make sure you
download Windows 10 ONLY from the official Website here. Do NOT use any other third party download sites!!!

Create your installation media (USB or burn the ISO to a DVD), and start the installation process.

When you are asked for a key, enter your Windows 7/8 key. If you have a PC from a large company like HP, Dell and the likes, it might also be that the serial key is stored in the computer BIOS, and you don't need to enter a key.

Other than that, you can't get the Xbox version of Minecraft from your Windows 10 Version purchase. Minecraft is not a "Play Anywhere" title, unfortunately.

However, Minecraft is currently included in the Xbox Game Pass. So if you get the Game Pass, you can play the Xbox One version of Minecraft and over a hundred other games.
