    Minecraft multiplayer with Xbox live gold


    My nine year old son has an Xbox one s, with a physical disc of minecraft, which he has been able to play without issue. Both his Xbox and the game have the most recent software updates. His console has a 500gb capacity but he is only using a fraction of this.

    He has just saved for, and purchased a years subscription to Xbox live gold, so that he can play with his friends in multiplayer.

    Today he has been invited / tried to join one of his friends minecraft games (they play via digital versions, not a physical disc).

    However, when trying to join this game, his Xbox is prompting him to purchase a digital copy for £16.50. This seems a bit of a con as he has a live subscription and physical copy of the disc, which supports Xbox live (according to the case).

    I would like to know;

    Is it possible to participate in Xbox live / multiplayer, from a disc when others are using a digital copy of the same game?

    If so, how can I make this possible?

    Hey there, Spawner65! I'm very sorry to see any issues with multiplayer in Minecraft! What you're running into is likely an issue with your Xbox Live Gold. It doesn't appear that your account has Gold here on the forums because you've got a gray gamertag.
    Minecraft multiplayer requires Gold.

    The notification for Minecraft in the Service Alert is solely for sharing to Facebook, not multiplayer games.

    If you continue to have issues with multiplayer in Minecraft and you have Gold on your account, please post back so that we can look further into any possible issues. :)

    "Looks like you need to renew gold" is a message that appears when your Xbox Live Gold subscription has expired or is about to expire. Minecraft Bedrock Edition requires an active Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online multiplayer with other players.

    To continue playing Minecraft bedrock on your PC, you will need to renew your Xbox Live Gold subscription. You can do this by visiting the Xbox website or using the Xbox app on your PC. Once you have renewed your subscription, sign in to your Xbox Live account within the Minecraft game to enable online multiplayer and remove the renewal prompt.

    Thanks for posting, the reason that Minecraft is not allowing for these functions seems to be attributed to the lack of an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Xbox Live Gold is needed to play any multiplayer functions in any game, this means that all games that
    have a single player option are playable but, if a multiplayer option is there, a gold subscription is needed to play it.

    Yes, Minecraft is an online multiplayer game so if he's playing on an Xbox console, he needs to have Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate.
