Minecraft/Microsoft account was compromised and my Java username was changed

Recently, Microsoft started to integrate Minecraft Java accounts with Microsoft accounts. Could you have merged the wrong account at some point or signed in with the wrong account?

If I may ask, what Minecraft version you have purchased? Is it Minecraft for Windows, or Minecraft Java Edition? Have you migrated your Mojang account to Microsoft account? If you have already migrated your account, use your Microsoft account to sign into Minecraft.

For Minecraft: Java Edition, users who have a Microsoft account can change their username for free at Log in | Minecraft. Navigate to My games and select the Minecraft: Java Edition dropdown box or you may refer to this link: Minecraft: Java Edition Username VS Gamertag FAQ – Home

As per your description, after changing the username and sign in the account, it seems that you do not own the game. Have you tried to sign in the account with old username to check if you can play with Minecraft just fine? That is to check if changing username with the version you have purchased is permitted. If you can sign in the old account with the old username and able to play the game, it would mean that changing the username of the version of Minecraft you have is not applicable. Yes, one of my Microsoft accounts DOES show up as owning the game. However it also has a "Profile Name" button under the Minecraft Java section on the My Games tab, and it tells me that my username is already taken when I enter the username I was using on my Java account before migration.

When I logged into windows 10 using my Microsoft account it instantly used my Xbox username. It there any way I can make my Minecraft account different than my Xbox username? This would be extremely helpful, especially because my Minecraft username
is 13 letters, and Xbox usernames can only be 12 letters!

Where can I find my username?

If you have a Mojang account, your username can be found and changed on your Mojang account page.

Can I change my username?

Users who have a Mojang account (the default account type for all accounts registered after November 2012) can change their username for free at account.mojang.com/me by clicking the
(Change) link next to your profile name.

If you sign in with your username, as older accounts do, you'll first need to migrate to a Mojang account before you can change your username.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this is the only way to get a gamertag change right now. However, I did want to clarify that your Minecraft Java username is separate from your gamertag. In-game your username will display your Minecraft Java username and not your gamertag. You are free to change your Minecraft Java username as many times as you would like for free after each waiting period. I hope this answered your question.
