  1. Minecraft can't play multiplayer cross platform

We've always been able to play Minecraft with a tablet/ phone and the xbox one with no problems. Haven't played in a while and now it gives a message "You cannot play online because of how your Microsoft account is set up". I've checked my settings on my
xbox and online and everything is showing allowed. I've never touched these strings before and nothing has changed with our internet. I don't have gold but my son does on his xbox and hasn't had any issues playing multiplayer though he doesn't play Minecraft
so can't test if it works on his. It looks like it's either Minecraft or my xbox/ account. Tried the various troubleshooting ideas through chat and nothing has changed. What else can I try???

    :)

You do not need to have gold to be able to play on mobile, you will need to have gold to be able to play on Xbox however.

Have you considered using the Gamesharing feature on your account with that of your son? You will be able to share the Gold subscription, so you only need to pay for one subscription.

For more infor on this you can look in the link below.

Is your tablet IOS/Apple? They updated recently which caused problems with some apps.

Also, did you have Gold before? You may need to renew if you did. If not plwase disregard.

Finally, minecraftforum.net may come in handy for any others in similar situations. Personally, I don't crossplay, but many on the forums do and may be able to help

Try signing out and re-sign. Also check if the game it's up to date.

We never needed gold before to play cross platform. I guess you would consider it local play because we're using the same wifi connection. We've had his account add my home xbox before but it never allowed me to be able to play online except for local.
