Your son is playing on the official release channel for Minecraft. His 1.12 version is currently the latest official version, whereas his friends have joined the Insider Program and are playing a beta test version of Minecraft.

His friends can either un-enroll from the Beta Insider Program, or you son can try to join the Insider Program and update his Minecraft to a beta version.

Be aware however, that beta version still contain untested parts, and the game can crash, malfunction and in turn destroy worlds if an error occurs.

If your son is still willing to test the Beta, he can download the free Insider app from the store, and join the Minecraft Beta.

Then he'll have to download/update his Minecraft to the newer beta version.

According to https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Bedrock_Edition_beta_1.13.0.1 it seems you opted in to recieve BETA updates to Minecraft.

As Beta versions are test versions and might contain unstable code, public servers do not update to Beta versions.

So if you wish to use public servers, make sure you only use non-Beta versions of Minecraft. If necessary, un-enroll from the Minecraft Insider Beta program, and wait until the next official update, or uninstall and re-download the latest public non-beta
version of Minecraft.

We really shouldn't have to do stuff like this to fairly unlock achievements. This isn't some beta PC version! Thanks for the tips; I'll try them but it really shouldn't be this difficult.

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are unable to connect to a friends' world, without receiving an "outdated server" error message.

This message occurs when one or more players that are attempting to connect to a world, are currently running a version of Minecraft that is out-of-date.

In other words, its likely that whatever platform either you or your buddy are using potentially need to be updated in order to effectively connect to this world.

There is a possibility that you may be both running your game while I is up-to-date, however, one of you may be running a

Beta version of the game.

Keep in mind that Beta versions cannot play with stable versions, and vice versa. If a player is using the beta and others are not, they will need to

unenroll from the beta, uninstall, and reinstall, or everyone can update to the beta.

If you can confirm this info, we might be able to assist further on this matter.

I believe it may be because you have the Beta Preview version of Minecraft on your Xbox! You are able to unenroll the Beta version of Minecraft through the Xbox Insider Hub app.

Follow this if you need:

Insider Content > Minecraft > Manage > Unenroll

You will need to uninstall and reinstall the game for this to take effect.

NOTE: Keep in mind that any worlds you have played as you were on the Beta version will be unplayable with the earlier version.
