Microsoft Urban Assault on Win 10 & 11 fixes

For those of you trying to play Urban Assault on Windows 7, 10 & 11.

For the pink (or messed up) menu colors, go into the game options, select primary display driver (not software), check or uncheck "16-bit textures", press OK. Go back into the Options menu and either disable or re-enable "16-bit textures". This will make the selected graphics card refresh. One note, sometimes the colors on the dossier screen, right before you start a mission are still messed up.

For misaligned menu buttons, same solution as above, only to get to the menu, click the button on the left side of the screen that aligns with the menu option that you're trying to select. The actual button will appear as just a gray bar, to the left of what you're trying to select. Hover over it and look at the bottom center of the screen, and the text there will tell you what you're highlighting. This comes in handy on the options menu.

You have only 2 reliable options.

1) run it in a virtual machine, set up for windows 98 or 98se, default settings, only reserve as much hdd space as you think you might need for the virtual machine to run your old games on. Worst case, you might have to use your integrated video, if you have it.

2) run the game on an actual windows 98 or 98se machine.

Ultimately, it's just an old program, with compatibility issues with newer technologies. It just wasn't designed to be run on modern machines, especially Windows XP and up. All of the issues with this game have been there since before XP SP1. I discovered this game back when Microsoft was pushing demo discs and their gaming network was just picking up. I started playing it on a windows 98 machine, then 98se and no probs. Xp comes out, gets brought to its knees by a 15 year old kid (blaster worm), then guess what? Pink screen, messed up colors, misaligned buttons. It's sad when hackers and crackers get a hold on Microsoft products, not even so much for piracy, but to fix their **** because they won't. Hell, even this message box doesn't work right.

Don't bother with the Microsoft guys. They have to run through a script which is nothing but generic BS, that will immediately aggravate anyone with ANY IT knowledge. Then they will simply transfer you to another department and you'll get nowhere. Plus, they'll get fired if they tell you what the real problem is. It's a money game, it's business. Think about it. They made these programs. They know exactly what's wrong with the programs. They will not fix any issues that do not have a high enough demand. Imagine if General Motors said "yeah, we know our trucks are exploding left and right, but we're not gonna fix it because not enough people are buying these trucks so its not worth it to us."

That's Microsoft.
