Mini-Survey: How do you purchase your digital content on Xbox Live?

A mix of Credit Card and online gift cards. The Xbox Live marketplace is weird for me, it charges me tax when using a credit card directly, but doesn't charge me any tax when using my Microsoft account balance. So usually what I tend to do is always makes sure I have something in my account balance so when I use my credit card, it only subtracts what was left over after taking from the account, and this never includes tax.

In Canada the only 2 provinces they don't charge tax is Ontario and quebec, where they still have retail stores, from what I get they consider any digital purchases as using a gift card (even if you use a credit card) and a gift card is not taxable its a nice loophole they abuse in those provincesClick to expand...

so it's strange that Sony has retail stores in Ontario and they do not charge tax
Nintendo has no stores and they charge tax on their eShop
Microsoft has stores and they charge tax

Just find it strange how one company is beating to a different drum

Microsoft charges a flat tax regardless of retail stores I use to pay 15% tax when in my province it was 13% it was just there standard fee to keep the government happy, sony on the other hand is acting like any psn purchases are gift card purchases hence no tax

When purchasing an item from the Store on the console it will give you an option to choose your payment method. If you have an amount of currency on your account then be sure to choose that option.

How can I access the gift card? In my order history when I purchased the gift card it says i got "miscellaneous credit" of $1.25 added to my microsoft account, not a gift card.

I have been buying Microsoft gift cards as a way to save up to buy a Series X. When the time to pre-order came around, I had $550 in Microsoft store credit. That was more than enough to cover the cost of the console and taxes. I finally got an order to go
through at the Microsoft store, but it did not use any of my store credit and it is going to charge my debit card instead. I have contacted support but was told the only way i can use my store credit is to cancel the order and re-order. Obviously if i do that,
i will not get the Series X.

This means I will probably be cancelling and will not get the Series X at launch. After already spending $550 towards it, I’m not going to spend that much again because I cannot change payment on the order to store credit. I can change cards, change it to
Paypal or even mobile billing but not store credit that is on my account. That doesnt even make sense to me.

So, you just restated my problem as the solution. Awesome. I don't know anyone with a 360, and do not have a credit card. I can use my microsoft account balance drafted from the gift card to purchase things from the microsoft store, but not the xbox store
on the xbox website, even though it is an xbox gift card, and not a "microsoft store" gift card.

Sometimes you have to manually select the Gift Card or the credit on your account when purchasing something or pre-ordering in the Store. A quick way to see if you have used the gift card or credit on your account is to go to the Store and click on a game
and press to Buy it (don't really buy it, you just want to see the payment options). Then it will pull up your payment options and you can see if your gift card balance or account credit is still there or not.
