I don't work for Microsoft and I don't work for Xbox, but I believe that the way to verify by SMS through a cell phone is more effective.

I say this because nowadays most people have a cell phone, and Microsoft Rewards allows you to redeem your reward using any cell phone number, as long as you have access to it.

I agree with you, there should be an option for those who already have an authenticator app, but unfortunately they still don't, who knows in the future.

The argument here is not one of effectiveness, it's security. Microsoft as an organization has had massive pushes for years to implement better security measures. The redemption process itself claims the SMS is for security reasons. And then uses the least secure of the methods available across the Microsoft platforms. The phrase for this is security theater.

Huge agree with this - SMS and phone verification shouldn't even be in the conversation when MSFT Authenticator is already enabled for an account. Personally, I won't use any service that "requires my phone number for security purposes." Yeah, that's not security - it's data mining, plain and simple. Rewards was one of the reasons I switched from Google to Bing, but if they're going to ask for a phone number in the name of security, guess it's time to switch to a more secure search option.

Microsoft has contractual obligations, and people from unsupported countries constantly try to make accounts that can get them sued. We see it here constantly
