Microsoft make MULTIPLAYER FREE

This would be hard, because it cost money to keep all the servers up and running. Also pay for the membership also helps Xbox come out with new features and updates.

PlayStation didn’t have paid multiplayer until near the end of the PS3 life cycle, they offered it for free before then and Nintendo is only just starting to charge for multiplayer. They don’t use the money from subscriptions for servers at all because Microsoft
doesn’t provide servers for any games that aren’t from first party developers (of which there are few.) And to adress games with gold, it’s just Microsoft giving away mostly mediocre games to incentivize their greedy paid multiplayer.

You have obviously made your mind up that there are no Xbox/microsoft servers. How is all your profile data backed up, game saved data, films/tv/music you have bought. How come when core services crash, players can't access Xbox servers to login and play
their games. I guess the 300,000 servers they announced for Xbox in 2013 are mythical. All of what I have stated, is why you pay a subscription to use Xbox servers and much more.

You don’t need Xbox live gold to buy movies and music on Xbox and you don’t need XBL Gold for saving game data and profile information. Gold isn’t needed for accessing Xbox messages, friends lists and other regular Xbox functions. The 60 dollar fee is only
about getting access to online multiplayer and the games/deals with gold. Everything that you need xbox live Gold for and everything you don’t is offered for free on Steam, and the fact that valve can offer it for free shows Microsoft could too. They just
want to sell it instead.

except you completely misunderstand what happened

First and foremost

Look at Nintendo's and Sony's profits

Under ps3 they Never made profit the chips were so expensive and offerings a free service tanked all profits from ps3 each console was sold as a 400 dollar loss

Now under ps4 and paid subscription they are making massive profits

Nintendo only made profit on hardware on win but they were never made profit on online future hardware except for switch

You see the difference yet

For your examples

Steam isn't sold with hardware but with games

They make up lost profit with selling games and only being able to access games with a steam account

In today's world that's a death sentence proven during the xbox one launch always online doesn't work

It's all a matter of priority. Use the service only if you feel you are getting the value you are paying for it. Personally I think it's worth it what with the support and the deals that come with gold

All of that same data is backed up and stored on PC.....for free.

PS4 lets you play free to play games like Fortnite online for free.

Sony and Nintendo are only doing it because they see how much profit MS make from it. If MS didn’t have this cash cow we know as paid Live, Xbox games division would have been closed down by now.
