Microsoft locked my account for unusual activity.

Hello all, I have reached a point of posting here, because I have quite literally had 0 luck elsewhere..

So one day I hop onto my Xbox as normal, I have never used Microsoft edge before but had to use it for something, I can’t quite remember regarding a game.. and when it first is launched it prompts you to sign into your Microsoft account, to which I did… everything seemed fine until the next day when I hopped onto my Xbox. It told me my account was locked due to unusual activity which made absolutely 0 sense to me.

So I had assumed this all occurred over me logging into Microsoft edge, which is still my presumption. I don’t want to be told otherwise that it isn’t, because there IS no other reason this would’ve occurred or took place…

Now onto the next issue, the account in which I have is a long time account of about 13-14 years.. the phone number associated with my account is extremely old and used to be a LANDLINE.. I do not have access to this anymore, so I have to resort to filling out the identity form… this further made me upset because on my Xbox the last name associated in my account has special characters. It is impossible to copy and paste the name into the bar to “prove” who I am… this makes me extremely upset because the amount of times I have called Microsoft support and gotten somebody who claims to be American and is not. I had this ISSUE, once prior, and the second I had help from somebody inside Canada/USA they fixed this issue…

Microsoft support seems now to be nothing but people that can’t assist you. I gave them 16 million different things to verify my identity (debit/credit cards associated with my account, various other security questions) and they still want to hold MY account ransom. Gave them 600 ways to prove it was me, THEY WANT TO SAY THAT MY ACCOUNT HAD AN UNUSUAL LOGIN, ON THE VERY XBOX I LOGIN TO EVERYDAY WITH THE SAME ACCOUNT, MATCH THE IP’S AND YOU’LL SEE ITS ME. I get told, (sorry we don’t have the power to do so) I ask for someone of power, and I get told I have to put in another support ticket to get yet another completely useless fool. Years and years of money wasted because they have to follow the protocol of an “automated” system that don’t even work to begin with.

If I cannot regain access to my account, I will never use any sort of MS product ever again… knowing now that they can basically just commit theft and take my account…

If anyone has any light to shed on this, please help, because I am at a total loss at this point.

I'm sorry to hear that your account has been blocked. I know how frustrating it can be when this happens. Let's say that the only alternative you have at this moment is to send the account recovery form (It is the only way to recover access to your account), I have also been through this situation, so I can give you some recommendations:

The first thing is to enter information that the account has, in case a phone number or card has been deleted, you should simply omit that information and not add it to the form. That said, you can enter the following link:

usually, some accounts are locked for unusual activity also update any outdated info you have for account backup emails or phone numbers.

Unfortunately, there is no way to remotely remove an account from an Xbox console. However, if you already changed your account's password and added 2FA, whoever's using your account on Xbox will be asked to provide your account's new password and 2FA the next time they try to sign in.

I'd also suggest reviewing your security information at https://account.live.com/proofs/manage/additional to make sure it's up to date.

Never received a email from Microsoft saying there were unusual activities in the account.

This is a scam that originated in 2019. I, too, have been constantly changing my password -- thankfully, I looked up "why I keep getting this unusual sign-in activity" today -- and found it is a scam. I have changed my password again! But this time I changed it legitimately on the Microsoft Site -- not the link provided by the "authentic" email. I hope it provides enough protection, as any of the other passwords might afford someone to hack the other information attached to that account!
