Microsoft Game Fallout 4 has Version Issue

I'm a happy Microsoft customer. I subscribe to several Microsoft services. I own two Xbox Ones and two licenses to Fallout 4, plus licenses to all DLCs and a large number of Creation Club items. I'm a former software engineer and have over 4 years experience in playing Fallout 4.

Microsoft experience a serious security problem in February of this year (2021). That problem caused corruption of my FO4 game and as a precaution, I erased the existing version of my game and reinstalled. The reinstall resulted in me being thrown back to a much earlier, buggier version of the game (version 1.10.0.19, pictured below).

I've gone to extensive lengths to cause my Xbox One X (also my Xbox One S) to update with the newest version. That includes spending the greater part of a week with Bethesda Software's Advance Support working through their recovery playbook, but we were not able to cause the version of Fallout 4 to update. In fact, apparently Bethesda became skeptical of my report and asked me to take a picture to demonstrate that I was reporting the correct version number. I did this and it is attached below.

Bethesda could not tell me what the current release should be, and asked me to contact Microsoft for support; which I did. Again, I worked with a Microsoft Agent on this forum and we tried the full troubleshooting checklist in an attempt to resolve the problem. Bethesda even asked me to advise them if I discovered the source of the problem, but the Agent and I couldn't reach a conclusion. Since then, I've engaged in numerous discussions of Reddit in the FO4 subreddit, but no one was able to shed light. I've also conducted several experiments, trying to trigger and update but to no avail.

However, there is evidence that the issue is almost certainly centered on Microsoft software rollout service, and is probably regional. I speculate that the only way this kind of thing could happen is if something went wrong when Microsoft (when it took possession of Bethesda's software) rolled out this software. A theory that comes to mine is: perhaps a regional data center did not get an update or an update failed. Another theory beyond Microsoft is, possibly there is a cache somewhere between Microsoft and regional ISP that is not getting updated. If either of these theories is correct, they'd be very simple to correct.

Will someone please help me contact someone at Microsoft with the specific technical knowledge to review this problem. As noted, I haven't ruled out that this could be a regional ISP issue. However, Microsoft is the gateway and I need further information to proceed.

It was my pleasure, very glad I could help! I think if you want to contact Bethesda about the bugs or instability, it might still be worth it. But given that many mods are fixes, I think they leave it to the community to bring the game to the state that they want to play in.

I am testing the Fallout 4 download version to see if I can replicate your issue. Of note: I will be downloading the game on and Xbox Series X from GamePass since I do not own the license (I once owned the disc) and currently do not have access to and Xbox One S/X so please forgive me for any discrepancies and I will try my best to get my hands on one in the coming days if I cannot find you a solution.

Additionally, I will apologize to start because I do not have access to your conversations with past Microsoft Agents or services, which means you may have to repeat some of those details here to procure a solution to this issue. Though I did find your last post here, I will do my best to only ask for more information if needed to prevent any repeat answer to your question.

I will start by saying I am a long time player of Fallout 4 on several platforms (all of them) I have purchased the game each time (I had a physical disc for Xbox that I no longer own, so all my DLCs are still in license and the game itself is the only thing I am taking from GamePass). Though I won't proclaim to have advanced technical knowledge, I can profess as a customer and long time fan of the Fallout 4 series.

Upon attempting to download my version very much mimics the image you've shown here: Version 1.10.019. As far as patch releases go the last that I could find officially released by Bethesda and is recorded in their DevNotes site is patch 1.10.80.0 Update which was only a few bug fixes.

After downloading I am still in v.1.10.0.19 on the Xbox itself - upon entering the game it is syncing my Fallout 4 Data.
Opening the game in the settings menu it says v.1.10.163.0.0.

I checked the settings for any additional aid for updating with no luck.

To be sure that everything is available, I've downloaded the Nuka World DLC to see if it updates or changes the game state in anyway.

With no changes I've made sure that I can access the Mods menu in the game. I have with no issue.

Could you log into the game and see in the game for these details:

In settings in the bottom right hand corner what version does it say? (ex mine is v.1.10.163.0.0.)
Can you access Mods?
Can you download and access DLCs?

Of further note, though I am sure it looks different, the Xbox does not require further updates to the game itself, though the game version and Xbox version do not match, v.1.10.163.0.0 was released in 2019 and should be the latest version within the game. This is the same for my PC version which is fully updated.

Please check your game and let me know what version is present.

Hi John,

Thank you for the interest in this problem. From your notes, I can identify with your process; however, when I download from disk or from Microsoft store, I initially get version 1.0.0.0. But as you note, once the game is opened it begins an update cycle; that returns me to version 1.10.0.19 and not 1.10.163.0.

BTW, as recently as last week I did an experiment with my Xbox One S, same install procedure and still got 1.10.0.9; so the problem is current.

The ticket refers to logs I kept of the process, and I can provide them if they'll be helpful. It was a long and tedious process that lasted several days. However, in the end I'm still on version 1.10.0.19.

I've been playing the game with 3 DLCs (have 3 yet to install), numerous Creation Club installs, and 6 mods installed. Everything works okay, but there are many defects that have long been fixed in later versions; things like, missing NPCs, and so forth. I've been holding off installing the Unofficial Bug Fix mod because it requires a much newer version.

You ask me to check the settings in the bottom right hand corner for version number, and I'm not sure what you are referring to. As far as I know, there are two places I can check for version on Xbox One, both in Manage Game & Addons: 1) shown in above jpg; 2) in the File Info dialog. Both sources show 1.10.0.9. If there is another place to look, please advise.

I spent a lot of time with Bethesda support trying to trick the system into updating to a newer version, but all attempts failed. This is why I've wondered if a regional datacenter didn't receive the latest update. And I don't understand the Microsoft rollout process, so it's just speculation.

Heard your reply come in, so I jumped up to check. I'll be darned, it does say 1.10.163.0.0. I never noticed that before and it's great news, so I guess I can play on with the game and even install that Unofficial Bug Fix mod and other mods.

OTOH, I'm baffled by the many defects I'm encountering in playing the game; the worst of it is important NPCs (Doc Anderson, The Scribe, Kelly the Brahmin Lady, others) are all missing from my game (currently level 68). There are several other serious defects and anomalies. But I guess those are questions for Bethesda.

I really thank you for pointing me to the actual version number. I've asked before but no one ever pointed me there.
