Are you referring to a prepaid MSP card, or an Xbox Gift Card?

MSP cards are worth Microsoft Points, which will transition to currency. These will eventually disappear as Gift Cards become the standard.

Xbox Gift Cards hold a value in local currency instead of MSP.

The crucial difference is that MSP cards can be taxed, but Gift Cards in most regions should not be taxed. The taxes that are then applied to your purchases on Xbox Live should go by whatever local sales tax rate you have in your region.

Exactly. Also, if you are purchasing something from the console it will ask for an alternate payment method just in case what you are buying goes over the amount you have in credit.

This sounds like a beta dashboard issue, if you downloaded your profile onto a friends console that has the beta this is a likely cause.

Unfortunately, there's no way to fix this at the current point in time and the only way you'd be able to purchase content is by going to the same console that has the beta on it.
