If you added an alternative or security email address, you should’ve receive an email to secure your account there.

Yes. That's what I was meaning to. The hacker changed and replaced your account's email address to his own email that's why you cannot access it with your own email address. So basically, your Microsoft/Xbox account has now a different primary email address which is used to sign in or login to the account - that's the email that you must find out to start the recovery process.

Given that your previous email address is a 3rd party email, I believe you still have access to its mailbox. It's the one I was referring above for you to check for any confirmation email regarding your account information change.

Was the old email a Microsoft email on your Microsoft account?

If so, then when you closed the Microsoft email you also in turn closed the Xbox account.

The Microsoft email IS the Microsoft account which in turn IS your Xbox account (gamertag) . They are all one in the same.

The xbox is part of the Microsoft account it is permanently attached and cannot be separated.

Now next step, if you have a Microsoft email, ie Hotmail.com msn.com outlook.com this is a Microsoft email, IF you change this email, EVERYTHING on that account will disappear. If the account name is something like yahoo.com or gmail.com you can replace
the email on this account. It will still be the same account but just a different name. So if you Dad has other things attached to the account like Microsoft Office, it would still be there.
