To be able to play on realms or with friends you will need to have a Gold subscription. There is 5 community servers with mini games aswell which also requires gold.

You can play splitscreen with a friend on the same console which wont need any Gold.

Bedrock edition is crossplay enabled between Windows 10, VR, mobile and Nintendo Switch.

For online multiplayer, yes, gold is required.

I've been having the same problem but I have tried every one of these methods and still got nothing I login to micraft it shows the red mojang screen then goes black and takes me back to the home screen its been like this for the past 3 days.
