    LG TV Understanding Resolution Limits - HDMI cable?


    Xbox Series S says my TV (LG NanoCell90 from 2020) is limited to 1440p @ 120Hz with Dolby Vision. I’ve tried 4:2:2 with 12-bit color, but I have experimented with other bit depths.

    The games look incredible, especially the ones optimized for Dolby Vision. I can’t see any banding, either. I guess I wanna know, is the limit the HDMI cable? I have purchased several cables and they all have the same limitation, but I’m told the Series X includes “Ultra High Speed HDMI” cable. What is so special about this cable?

    I tend to shy away from expensive cables because I’ve tested a few of them and they have made no difference. I know there is snake oil, but what is the “Ultra High Speed HDMI” cable and would it let me get 4k120 or should I assume it’s the TV that is limited regardless even if I had the Series X?

    Part of the challenge is that this 120 Hz Dolby Vision support resulted from a software update and LG support has not been able to provide me with an updated spec sheet, so the TV is a question mark now. If anybody has some advice, I’d appreciate it!

    Unable to connect system to LG TV

    LG's HDMI support is notoriously unstable, not sure if it is the way they handshake or whether their software is poor but it is a long standing complaint you can find in many places on the internet.

    Xbox 360 had issues with LG TV's as well (do a web search for xbox one lg tv hdmi and you'll get pages of results including PlayStation issues connecting to LG TV's so not limited to Microsoft).

    Things to try:

    On your TV that it works with, set your Xbox One to a lower resolution i.e. 720p then plug it in to the LG TV and see if it works.

    Check for a TV firmware update

    Reset TV to factory default settings

    Try other HDMI cables

    Try a HDMI to AV converter for your sister's TV and use AV cables with your Xbox One when using that TV.

    You will need a hdmi cable, The default cables have a limit for the resolution, I tried it on my tv that's able to support 1080 but cables only did 480. Always reverted to 480 with cables but kept all settings with the hdmi cable

    Have you checked a different HDMI cable? Maybe the cable is defective and has trouble transmitting higher resolutions properly.
    Have same issue, no not the TV or the cable. I tried two different HDMI cables and then on second hi-def LG TV. Second TV is where to Xbox worked under Hi resolution in the past.

    All still showed no 720 or 1040 option, pls advise on next steps??

    The Xbox one S works under 640, is there a program or tools I can load to reset the graphics??

    Resync my TV? I fixed the problem by switching the HDMI input into the tv from one HDMI port to another. How would resolution have anything to do with it? The ports are all the same, with the same resolution. I believe there developed a conflict since
    I am using the provided HDMI 2.1 cable that came with the Xbox Series X, connecting the console to my LG TV with an 2.0 HDMI port. I have the feeling that had something to do with it. My TV is barely more than a year old.

    The LG one from Amazon does have 4K, so that is a decent choice.
    The LG is NOT 4K. It's being sold in a bundle with an Amazon Basics 4K HDMI cable, which is completely pointless with a 720P TV. The LG resolution is only 1366 x 768.

    It's curious way for none 4K a TV to be sold by Amazon. I think StuartATrueRed didn't see that bit when they posted it.

    Don't buy the LG!
