  1. LG C2 - Console Booting to Incorrect Resolution (640x480 / 1080p)

This is a new thread to replace the old one as I'm unable to edit the original title to remove 'solved'.

    Issue:

    • When powering on my Series X connected to a 42" LG C2, it will sometimes not display at the correct resolution, usually 640x480 although it sometimes displays at 1080p. When this happens, the console no longer detects any other resolutions as being available to select plus the console doesn't detect any enhanced features of the TV such as VRR, HDR, 4k etc. The issue seems to be random although unlisted changes within the Alpha Skip updates could be affecting frequency. Issue doesn't happen with PS5 console.

    The only ways I've found to resolve the issue are to either;

    • Wait a couple of minutes then reboot the console from holding the guide button (have to wait a couple of minutes or the console doesn't reboot correctly and displays at the same incorrect resolution)
    • Force a full power off by holding the power button for several seconds
    • Toggle the VRR options in the TVs Game Bar several times (doesn't always work)
    • Toggle the HDMI Deep Colour setting in the TVs HDMI Settings menu (Doesn't always work
    • Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends (Console and TV) then reconnect

    • TV is on latest firmware 03.21.30 (21/12/22)
    • Console at latest Alpha Skip Ahead

I try to report each occurrence via the Report a Problem app using tracing as advised in the 'Known Issues' part of each update release notes however due to how frustrating the issue can be sometimes, I'd just turn the console off instead.

Original thread: Console Booting to 640x480 - LG C2 (Solved with recent VRR update) : xboxinsiders (reddit.com)

For anyone who was having similar issues, the new option in the recent Alpha Skip Ahead build which allows you to set VRR to only enable when a game is started seems to have resolved the issue of the console booting to 640x480 on my LG C2.

EDIT: (02/10/22) - After 9 days of daily testing, I've had the issue of the console booting to 640x480 again. The only thing that changed since the VRR update and it seemingly being resolved is that over the last 2 days I've had a game running under quick resume which may or may not be related.

    • After 1st reboot the issue resolved except that for some reason my 'XBOX Live Gold' tab was replaced with 'Exclusive Discounts' tab but was empty plus the Quick Resume tab was empty.
    • After the 2nd reboot everything returned to normal but Quick Resume was still empty.

EDIT: (07/10/22) - I had the issue again on 03/10/22 and before rebooting the XBOX to fix it I found that when opening the Game menu on the C2 the settings were different to what I'd set, as if the TV was treating it as a different input source. I then disabled the HDMI forum VRR option (which I had originally disabled in favour of Freesync) and immediately the screen switched back to the correct settings and the XBOX was displaying correctly (4k, VRR , HDR, 120hz). Since doing this I haven't had the issue for 4 days and will update in a week or so's time if it happens again.

EDIT: (11/10/22) - Issue happened again. No changes made to TV or XBOX settings. Only way to resolve the issue is to reboot the console after wating a couple of minutes or to toggle VRR via the TVs settings. I'll get a mod to change the title of this thread to removed 'solved' and keep reporting the issue using Report a Problem until a proper fix is released.

EDIT: (22/12/22) - Currently testing to see if turning off the automatic console updates changes anything as I've noticed that when the console powers up to download updates, the TV shows the XBOX input as active.

    Current TV Settings

    • VRR Gsync = ON
    • Freesync = OFF
    • Prevent Input Delay = Boost
    • HDMI-CEC (Simplink) = OFF
    • HDMI Deep Colour = 4K
    • Input Label = PC

    XBOX Settings

    • VRR = Gaming Only
    • HDR10 = ON
    • Auto HDR = OFF
    • Dolby Vision = Both OFF
    • ALLM = OFF
    • Refresh = 120hz
    • Resolution = 4k
    • Official 1TB Expansion Card

Xbox series X and LG C2 problems.

No, unfortunately, one cannot speak of clarity in this case, because I have experienced the exact opposite case.

I own the LG C1 and the LG C2, and the handshake problems have NEVER occurred in over a year of use on the C1! Instead, however, they keep coming back with the C2 on the same Xbox Series X console. When switching this console back to the C1, the same picture again, NEVER! LG C1 and LG C2 both support Dolby Vision (for gaming). Before testing the LG C2 with one / my Series X, I had never heard of the handshake issue with Dolby Vision. Besides, the LG C2 works very well, but the Dolby Vision handshake in games can hardly be tested on other devices, because the PS5 does not support this feature and other devices are at least unknown to me.

    Problem displaying in 1080p resolution

I can change the resolution out of 640x480 but if I choose 720p, 1440p or 1080p the green screen start again.

I tried using another device (laptop, xbox 360) with the same HDMI cable and they are displayed in 1080p perfectly. As soon as I reconnect the HDMI cable on my xbox one the screen shrinks in 640x480

Xbox series X and LG C2 problems.

My new Xbox came an hour ago. Happy to report no low resolution issues on this console.

Including my new Xbox, my brother's Xbox and my ps5 that's now 3 consoles that have no resolution issues connected to my LG C2.

Do you still think it's the TV motherboard that needs replacing??

It does appear to be the original first edition Xbox series x that has the fault.

No wonder LG aren't so eager to do this.

Resolution Defaulting to 480p with LG C2

There are countless articles on the internet right now recommending the LG C2 as one of the best TV's to use with an Xbox Series X to take advantage of all of the features. If what you say is true then it'd be nice for someone from LG or Microsoft to acknowledge this officially so people don't get burned when they buy a $1300+ television, run into technical issues, and the answer is just "these two devices are incompatible". I spoke with a Microsoft hardware person using the phone support line today and created a ticket. It sounds like similar issues may have been seen before but they did not acknowledge this being a known issue with LG OLED televisions and the current generation of Xbox.
