left joystick help...work in game but not on menu!

I am now stuck on the white reset screen as shown in the photo in my previous post. if i try to move left to select engliush on the menu, it flicks straight back to bottom right of screen, therefore i am unable to even set the xbox up!! have tried connecting
controller via lead but issue remains.

When you try to Update xbox wireless controller does the Dpad allow navigation Left and Right,
Up and Down?

Directional pad (D-pad) (8): This is a raised plus sign-shaped toggle between the left and right sticks. It moves the focus up, down, right, and left in the user interface. Used to interact with games, apps, and the Xbox One interface.

Try turning the console off, connect the controller via uSB plug/play cable and then turn the console back on.

If you get a message to update the controller, allow it to update.

Otherwise follow the steps in the link above to update controller.
