    Issue when trying to change GamerTag


    Hi, I've just been talking to Microsoft support in regards to changing my GamerTag. In the end they suggested I should post it here as they were not able to solve my issue.

    The GamerTag I would like to change to is not currently in use. Microsoft support also confirmed this. The name does not break any rules. It's not harmful or vulgar in English or any other language. I've also managed to get the name on Twitch, Twitter and Playstation Network.

    When I try to change to the GamerTag, I get the error message - "This gamertag isn't allowed. Try a different one." regardless of the platform I try to change it on.

    The name is written starting with a capital letter and the rest are lowercase.
    e.g. "Name".

    However, if I try to write the name with another capital letter part way through, it allows it.
    e.g. "NaMe".

    Is this a technical limitation? Is this a new feature that needs to be requested?

    Hi Thomas,

    I'm not quite understanding what the issue is. Is the error occurring when changing your Gamertag? Or were you able to change the Gamertag and the issue lies when you try to login when Minecraft opens?

    Please explain with more detail what you are trying to do when you get the error and post the exact error here so we have an idea.

    I changed my gamertag awhile ago from “XCD to xcd” and was able to change it back to “XCD” with no issue now when I try to change it back to lowercase I get the same error

    “Something went wrong. Try your gamertag again.” Been like this for awhile

    No "XXX is online" notification

    Changing your gamertag is most likely not the issue. When I changed my gamertag back in September last year I never had an issue with notifications. I'll keep looking around to try and find an answer to your question but I just posted this to try and help
    you rule out a possibility.

    If the name change attempt tells you the gamertag is taken, it is taken. What's probably happening is that there's a difference in the spacing: I can't change to
    RunningPubs because you are Running Pubs (with a space), but trying to send a message to
    RunningPubs would fail because that variation isn't the one in use.

    (I suppose you're trying to "purchase" a gamertag change, but these questions usually go in "Managing My Account", where there's a sticky post covering exactly this issue.)
