Issue using Xbox controller on PC Game Pass with random games.

Hi there, not sure how to fix this. I've just started a trial for Game Pass on PC and for the most part, I think it's great. There's a lot of games on there that I probably would have never purchased outright so it's cool to be able to try out all these games.

However, I've encountered an issue that happens seemingly at random. I have an Microsoft branded Xbox Bluetooth controller, for almost every single game I play, there are no issues with it at all. However, I've found that with some games on Game Pass, the controller won't work at all. I first got the issue with Fallout 76 (lol), and I spent some time with it, but managed to alter the config.ini file to fix it. Now I've got the issue with One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 and Omno.

One Piece I'm not that fussed about, but I really wanna try out Omno with a controller. Unfortunately, I can't alter the config files to fix the problem as Game Pass installs are placed into a folder that is locked off to me. I've given myself ownership of the folder and sub-folders/files, but for some reason I'm still not allowed to alter the config files.

I have tested with the controller both on a Bluetooth connection and wired USB connection, I've re-paired the controller but no dice. I can't even push the games into Steam as a non-Steam game to get around the problem. I know it's not an issue with the controller as it's a very recent purchase, but I have also played other games from Game Pass like Aragami 2, Destroy All Humans!, and Need for Speed Heat with my controller and not encountered any issue whatsoever.

I just don't understand why a Microsoft branded Xbox controller isn't working with games downloaded from Microsoft's PC Game Pass onto a Windows OS. How is there not a compatibility layer integrated into the actual Xbox app for their own controller?

If anyone has any solutions, I would be very grateful.

Hello Sveik, have you checked if you have the latest version of Windows installed, at 21H2, because recently came out the latest update to Windows 10.

Hi Georges, my system was on 21H1 but I've since updated to 21H2 as well as installed any other cumulative updates but the issue persists.

Upon further checking, to answer your inquiry from one of the answers in the forums regarding the issue with the Xbox game pass and PS4 controller:

"as the windows system does not natively support the ps4/5 controller you have to use ds4 which is a program that basically disguises the ps4 controller as an xbox controller, some games in gamepass work, some don't, i have a ps4 controller and have used it for all games on every store except gamepass."

It seems Xbox game pass does not support 3rd party system.

You can play on Xbox Family console and you can use your controller. But i think the game launch on PC too with the Xbox Game Pass PC.

It's pretty much in the title. Game Pass games only work with Xbox One controllers but I would really like to sometimes use a PS4 controller or maybe 8Bitdo SNES controller (I don't know how third party wheel or flight controller support is but I am betting
it's not the best either). but you need to use workaround software that emulates Xinput devices.

this has been a feature on steam for a long time and you can even load custom profiles per game. it's a really necessary feature for PC games especially the broad genres featured on Game Pass.

There are a lot of features and fixes still needed on Game Pass PC but this is a really big one that needs to be addressed. I'm sure this is not a difficult issue to solve since games that do support many controllers on steam don't on the Game Pass versions.
