Is there a way to get my old gamertag back or fix it for free?

So I wanted to change my gamertag because my old one was a bit silly. I went to change it to my new one, "starduster", and when I checked availability it was fine. It showed my new username with a tag similar to something like discord, "Starduster#7054",
the id part was greyed out, so I thought that wouldn't be shown at all, as I hate having numbers in my usernames. Changed it, went to my profile and it just merged the number with the new gamertag? I did not want this. I know this is likely my fault, but having
the numbers there were not at all what I wanted. Is there any way I can get my old gamertag back, or fix it for free?

The only way to fix it would be to change it again which would involve paying again. There is no way to get another free change. If the system still sees your old gamertag as being in use or someone else has already taken it, you will be given the suffix
again. The only way to have a gamertag without the suffix is to pick a tag that no one else has.

those numbers are to identify users with the same name, the GTs have changed for more than one person can have the same name, but those numbers don't appear for your friends are a label to distinguish people
