There are no restrictions or specific precautions for transferring clips or images to an external drive. There is likely an issue either with the file or your external hard drive. You should try with other files and, if possible, another external storage device to troubleshoot the problem.

To solve this issue you can also try turning off and then turning back on your Xbox console. A complete power cycle of the console allows for a full restart.

To do this.

Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for at least 10 seconds.
Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.

I suppose another question is, can i transfer my games to my pc and then to the Xbox external hard drive some how?

hi i know this is a copy paste reply. i’m asking how to transfer the existing clips from internal hard drive to an external ones. i wanna move the ones that are there thus far. i already switched captures to save to the external drive. thanks.

I don't know what file format Xbox One uses with external hard drives but when you first connect a drive the console should offer to format the drive for games (If it meets the specs), With my Xbox One I have both a 2TB and 4TB external hard drives connected
and working without any issues for playing games.

I have the same set up as gds1972 and it handles the data with no issues. It is maybe that using FAT34 allows file transfer of game clips to non Microsoft OS possible.

As far as I know, there is no way to stop them from auto-deleting, but you could connect an external hard drive to the console and use that for your screenshots and video clips. When you connect the drive do not format it for games, and make the storage the default for screenshots and game clips, and then you will be able to connect the drive to a PC to watch them or transfer them to another device if you wish.
