Is my account canceled?

Okay so this is an odd situation. I had an xbox with xbox live until 5/2018. When I sold the xbox I chose not to cancel my xbox live account so that my friend could use it. I forget what subscription I had but I was billed $9.99 monthly for it. So today
I went to cancel it. I cannot for the life of me remember what email I had on the account and my phone number has changed, therefore I cannot verify my account. I have contacted xbox live and they cannot tell me anything without the ability to verify the account.
I gave them my credit card info and they were able to see that it was on file. They then deleted my credit card from their system. One agent told me that I would still be billed monthly so I would have to go through my bank to have the account closed. Another
agent told me that my account is canceled as soon as I removed my credit card. My bank has given me no help since I voluntarily started the account. The owner of the xbox claims to have deleted all my info from the xbox and he's offering no help.

Am I still going to be billed monthly? I don't want xbox live to bill me, have no credit card to take the money from, and then end up sending the account to collections.

All you need to do is make a simple call to phone support to cancel an account. It cannot be done from the website unless you just wait for the Gold to run out on the account.

Hey there Andrew,

Thank you for bringing up these questions to us. I definitely understand where you could have some concern on if you will continue to get billed or not. Being that you have already removed your card from the account, there is no longer a payment instrument
to bill for the subscription. When the Agent removed the card from the account, the subscription should have either been cancelled immediately, or the auto-renewal would have been turned off.

You can cancel the Microsoft Account tied to the gamertag (see:
support.xbox.com/.../cancel-microsoft-account) but not the gamertag itself.

Hello Andrew,

Sorry for this confusion with the cancellation. When you remove a card from the account, you have to disassociate it with any subscription first. In all cases when the card is removed by a support agent it cancels the subscription. Your account is not cancelled
just the subscription. You shouldn't get billed for it any longer. As the card has been removed from the account, they wont be able to pull it up in the future.
