With the revised gamertag system, it is possible for you to choose any gamertag you wish, even one that may already be taken or inactive. While that will be what appears in-game, it will also have a numeric hashtag next to it (such as GamerTag123 #1234)
to distinguish it from others and from the original. With this new system, it's unlikely that older gamertags will be re-released, but if it does happen, as it did about 4 years ago now, it will be announced.

Dou you want the orginal gamertag, right? No '#123' and things like that. Like the other friends said above, this is no possible, unfortunely.

As of August 30, 2019, if a person does not sign into their Microsoft Account within 2 years, the account will be closed which should free up the tag. There are no guarantees that will free up the tag you want if the person who owns it is using other Microsoft
services.

Inactive spaced gamertags should be removed and released. They are inactive, 100 percent inactive place holding gamertags.
